Unlock Family Travel with Amex Gold Card Benefits

Amex Credit Cards for Family Points Travel

For current welcome bonus amounts, check our Current Best Offers page — those numbers change too often to keep accurate here.

Amex Membership Rewards points are widely considered the most valuable transferable currency in the points game, thanks to an enormous list of airline and hotel transfer partners and frequent transfer bonuses. For families, the Amex Gold card in particular punches well above its annual fee.

Why Amex works well for families

Best-in-class transfer partner list, including ANA, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, and more — useful for finding award seats for 3-4 people, not just 1.

Strong everyday bonus categories — on the Gold card that match family spending almost perfectly.

Offers are often personalized — always check your specific logged-in offer (and CardMatch) rather than assuming the public offer is the best one available to you.

The card I’d start most families on: American Express Gold Card

Annual fee: $325 (always check your personalized logged-in offer via Amex or CardMatch, since it’s often higher than the public one.)*

Highlights for families:

– 4x points at restaurants worldwide (up to $50,000/year)
– 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000/year) — this alone can move the needle fast for a family doing weekly grocery runs
– 5x points on prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com
– Annual dining and Uber Cash credits that, if used, offset a meaningful chunk of the annual fee

Application Tips

Amex has a “once per lifetime” bonus rule on most personal cards — you generally can’t earn the welcome bonus on the same card twice, ever. This makes timing your application important: apply when the public or targeted offer is genuinely elevated, not just whenever you happen to think of it. American Express “Family Language” dictates that if you hold or have held a higher-tier or equivalent card, you may be ineligible to earn the welcome bonus on a lower-tier card within that same family. This prevents “bonus farming” and makes application order critical (Green → Gold → Platinum).
